How Do Crystal Bowls Produce Sound?
Each
bowl is accompanied by a wooden wand that has either a rubber
ball at the end or is covered with suede.
One plays the
bowl by striking the rim or dragging the wand around the outer
rim to produce the desired overtones. The
intensity of the overtones increases as you go around the rim
each time. The crystal bowl quickly appears to be "singing".
This action is similar to sliding your finger along the rim of
a wine glass to create a high pitched sound.
It is our preference to use the wooden wand with the
rubber ball at the end. We find that we can get a better, clearer
sound from the crystal bowl as we play it, and we can also strike
the rim harder without risking breakage.
